What Notting Hill is like to stay in
The streets climb gently from Notting Hill Gate towards Ladbroke Grove, lined with stucco villas and colourful mews houses. Many of the houses back onto private communal gardens, which keeps the area green and quiet.
Each August bank holiday weekend the Notting Hill Carnival fills the streets with steel bands, sound systems and parades. It is a busy weekend to be based here, and a memorable one.
The neighbourhood has changed a great deal over the past century. In the 1950s and 60s it was home to many of London's Caribbean arrivals, whose community began the Carnival. It later drew artists, musicians and writers, and today it is one of London's most sought-after residential areas. Its reputation was further boosted by the 1999 film that took its name, and the blue door on Westbourne Park Road remains a photo spot. Despite this attention, many streets remain quiet and residential, especially around Ladbroke Square and the communal gardens.
Markets, food and cinemas
Portobello Road market is busiest on Saturdays, with antiques at the Notting Hill end and food, vintage clothing and bric-a-brac further north. Westbourne Grove and Ledbury Road have fashion boutiques and cafés, and Kensington Park Road has some of the area's best-known restaurants.
The Electric Cinema and the Coronet are two of London's historic picture houses.
Parks and nearby neighbourhoods
Holland Park, with its Japanese Kyoto Garden and peacocks, is to the south-west, and Kensington Gardens is close to the east. The Design Museum on Kensington High Street is within easy reach.
