How East London divides up
Shoreditch and Hoxton are the creative core, with galleries, agencies and nightlife in converted warehouses. Spitalfields keeps its Georgian silk-weavers' houses and covered market. Brick Lane is known for its curry houses, bagel bakeries and Sunday markets.
Further east, Canary Wharf is a second financial district, and Stratford is built around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The area has a long history of arrivals, from Huguenot weavers in Spitalfields to Jewish, Bangladeshi and many other communities in Whitechapel and along Brick Lane. That history shows in the food, the buildings and the street markets. More recently, Hackney Wick, Dalston and Walthamstow have developed their own restaurant and arts scenes. The Olympic Park now includes the London Stadium, the Aquatics Centre and East Bank, a new cultural quarter that includes a V&A site and the BBC. Each part of East London offers a quite different experience.
Markets, food and culture
Columbia Road flower market on Sunday mornings, Broadway Market in Hackney on Saturdays and Old Spitalfields Market through the week show the area's appetite for independent traders. The Whitechapel Gallery and the V&A's East London sites add serious culture, and Victoria Park is one of the largest green spaces in this part of town.
For business stays
Tech firms cluster around Old Street, the City fringe draws finance and law, and Canary Wharf houses global banks and media groups. Staying east puts you close to all three, and the Elizabeth line has made cross-London journeys much simpler.
