What Fitzrovia is like to stay in

The area took its name from the Fitzroy Tavern, where writers and artists gathered in the early twentieth century. Georgian and Edwardian terraces house design studios, production companies and flats above small shops. Fitzroy Square, designed by Robert Adam, is the calmest corner.

It is busy at lunchtime and early evening, then settles quickly.

Fitzrovia has a long creative history. George Bernard Shaw and Virginia Woolf both lived on Fitzroy Square, and the Fitzroy Tavern drew Dylan Thomas and George Orwell among its regulars. Pollock's Toy Museum was based here for decades, and the area remains home to many design studios, architects and production companies. Whitfield Gardens and Crabtree Fields are small green spaces for a quiet lunch. The mix of homes, offices and restaurants keeps the streets lively during the day while leaving them calm on weekends, when office workers are away and residents have the neighbourhood to themselves.

Where to eat and drink

Charlotte Street and Goodge Street hold one of London's densest runs of restaurants, from long-standing Greek and Italian dining rooms to modern Japanese and Middle Eastern kitchens. Rathbone Place and Percy Street have wine bars and pubs, and Oxford Street is at the southern edge when you need the big shops.

For business stays

Fitzrovia is a centre for media, advertising and tech, and University College London and its hospital are on the eastern side. Soho, Marylebone and Bloomsbury are all close, so a stay here works for meetings across the West End.

Why ask the residence direct?

Booking sites charge the residence a commission on every night. Ask direct and there is none, so the residence has room to move: unpublished specials, a better rate for longer stays, breakfast, flexible check-in and check-out, and sometimes help with theatre or restaurant bookings.
