What Pimlico is like to stay in

Thomas Cubitt built much of Pimlico in the mid-nineteenth century, and the uniform terraces and squares, such as Warwick Square, Eccleston Square and St George's Square, give it a calm, orderly look. Traffic is limited on many streets, and the area feels settled and residential.

Churchill Gardens, one of London's best-known post-war housing estates, sits by the river and shows a very different side of the district.

Pimlico's calm owes a great deal to its design. The streets were laid out to discourage through traffic, and many remain quiet even at rush hour. The area has attracted politicians, civil servants and writers for generations, and Winston Churchill once lived on Eccleston Square. The Pimlico Road area, towards Chelsea, has a farmers' market on Saturdays and cafés on Orange Square. Along the river, Pimlico Gardens and the Grosvenor Canal redevelopment add green space and new homes. It suits guests who want central access without the constant activity of the West End.

Culture, food and walks

Tate Britain, on Millbank, holds British art from the Tudors to today, including the largest collection of Turner's work. The riverside path runs east to the Houses of Parliament and west towards Chelsea.

Tachbrook Street has a small street market and local cafés, and Warwick Way and Lupus Street have neighbourhood restaurants and pubs. Pimlico Road, towards Belgravia, is known for antiques and interiors showrooms.

For government and business stays

Parliament, Whitehall and many government departments and professional bodies are close to Pimlico. It is a sensible base for civil service secondments, parliamentary work or meetings in Westminster and Victoria.
