What Chelsea is like to stay in

Red-brick mansion blocks and pastel terraces line streets off the King's Road, with communal garden squares behind them. The Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners, sits by the river, and its grounds host the RHS Chelsea Flower Show each May.

Painters and writers from Whistler and Turner to Oscar Wilde lived here, and Cheyne Walk still carries their blue plaques.

The neighbourhood has a strong sense of place. Chelsea Old Church, where Thomas More worshipped, stands on the Embankment, and Carlyle's House on Cheyne Row keeps the Victorian historian's rooms much as he left them. The National Army Museum sits beside the Royal Hospital. In the 1960s the King's Road was at the centre of Swinging London, and Mary Quant and Vivienne Westwood both opened shops here. Today, the western end of the King's Road, known as World's End, is more relaxed, with cafés, design stores and small independent restaurants.

Where to eat, shop and walk

The King's Road mixes fashion labels, interiors shops and cafés, and Duke of York Square adds a Saturday food market next to the Saatchi Gallery. Sloane Square has the Royal Court Theatre and Peter Jones.

For walks, the Chelsea Embankment follows the river, Battersea Park is across the Albert Bridge, and the Chelsea Physic Garden, founded in 1673, is one of London's oldest botanic gardens.

For families and longer stays

Chelsea has good schools, clinics and supermarkets alongside its boutiques, which makes it practical for relocations and stays of a month or more. The South Kensington museums are just to the north for rainy days.
