What the South Bank is like to stay in
The riverside walk runs from the London Eye past the Southbank Centre, the BFI, the National Theatre and Tate Modern to Shakespeare's Globe and on to Tower Bridge. It is lively with walkers, street performers and book stalls through the day.
A street or two back from the river, around Ewer Street, Southwark Street and Union Street, the area is calmer, with railway arches turned into bars, workshops and restaurants.
The area has a long history as London's entertainment district. In Shakespeare's time, Bankside was home to theatres, bear-baiting pits and taverns, beyond the reach of the City authorities. The reconstructed Globe stages plays in the open air through the summer, and the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse runs through the winter. The Clink Prison Museum and the replica of Francis Drake's Golden Hinde are nearby. The Festival of Britain in 1951 left the Royal Festival Hall, which still anchors the Southbank Centre and its programme of concerts, talks and festivals.
Food, culture and views
Borough Market, one of London's oldest food markets, is the local larder, with produce, street food and restaurants around it. Southwark Cathedral sits alongside. The Shard rises above London Bridge, with viewing floors and restaurants near the top.
Across the Millennium Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral and the City are close.
