What Waterloo is like to stay in
The Cut and Lower Marsh are the local streets. The Cut has the Old Vic and the Young Vic, two of London's most respected theatres, and Lower Marsh has a weekday street-food market, independent cafés and vintage shops.
Behind the main roads, streets of Georgian and Victorian terraces around Roupell Street are some of the best preserved in this part of London, and very quiet.
Waterloo is also known for its street art. Leake Street, a tunnel under the station, is a legal graffiti space where the walls are repainted constantly, and it now holds bars and restaurants as well. The Waterloo area has a long working-class history, and the Old Vic, which dates from 1818, was known for offering affordable theatre to local audiences. Today the neighbourhood combines busy commuter streets with quieter pockets, and it attracts a mix of office workers, theatre-goers and visitors to the South Bank.
The river and the sights
The London Eye, the Southbank Centre, the National Theatre and the BFI are just north on the riverside. Westminster Bridge leads to the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, and Hungerford Bridge crosses to Embankment and the West End.
St Thomas' Hospital is on the riverfront opposite Parliament, and the Florence Nightingale Museum is within its grounds.

Waterloo is surrounded by offices, from the Shell Centre redevelopment to media and professional firms on the South Bank. Trains run from the station to south-west London and Surrey, and the Jubilee and Northern lines link to Canary Wharf, the City and the West End.
