There's a lot more to Knightsbridge than Harrods

Most visitors come to Knightsbridge for Harrods and are gone within the hour, which is a shame. Give it a day and you get the Duke of Wellington's house at Hyde Park Corner, a lido in the middle of Hyde Park, and some of the calmest residential squares in London, a few minutes from the Brompton Road.

Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Sloane Street

Do Harrods on a weekday, at opening time, and go straight to the Food Halls on the ground floor before the place fills up. Harvey Nichols, on the corner of Sloane Street, is smaller and much easier to shop, and its Fifth Floor bar and terrace is where you sit down afterwards. Sloane Street runs south from Harvey Nichols towards Sloane Square, lined with the London flagships of the big fashion houses; walk down one side and back up the other.

Beauchamp Place, a short street off the Brompton Road just past Harrods, is lined with small independent boutiques in narrow Regency houses, a calmer change from the department stores. Keep going west along the Brompton Road and the Brompton Oratory appears on your right, then the V&A just beyond it on Cromwell Road. From Knightsbridge station it's about a fifteen-minute walk, and it's the easiest way to join a morning's shopping to an afternoon in the museums.

Hyde Park Corner and the park

Apsley House, at Hyde Park Corner, was the Duke of Wellington's London home, known in his day as Number One, London. English Heritage runs it now. The paintings include Velázquez, Goya and Rubens, many of them captured from Joseph Bonaparte's baggage train after the Battle of Vitoria in 1813, and as it only opens on certain days, check first. Across the traffic stands Wellington Arch, designed by Decimus Burton and finished in 1830, where you can go inside and out onto the balconies for a view down Constitution Hill to Buckingham Palace.

Hyde Park is Knightsbridge's northern edge. The Serpentine Lido opens for public swimming in the summer season, and the Rose Garden near Hyde Park Corner is at its best in June. Just over the line in Kensington Gardens, the Serpentine Galleries show contemporary art and put up a new architect-designed pavilion every summer.

Ten minutes west along Kensington Road, the Albert Memorial faces the Royal Albert Hall. The Hall runs guided tours when rehearsals allow, and they're worth doing even if you're not seeing a concert.

Mews, squares and dinner

The side streets are the best free thing in Knightsbridge. Ennismore Gardens Mews is a cobbled lane of painted former stables. Montpelier Square, a few minutes behind the Brompton Road, is a small stucco square so quiet you can hear birds, and Trevor Square has Georgian houses round a central garden. Down on the southern edge towards Chelsea, Pont Street gave its name to Pont Street Dutch, the red-brick, tall-gabled style of the late Victorian houses along it, and the whole area is thick with listed buildings.

Zuma, on Raphael Street, is still the hardest Knightsbridge dinner to get into, so book well ahead for a weekend. For lunch between shops, the Harrods Food Halls and the Harvey Nichols Fifth Floor both do the job, and most streets here have scores of places to eat within a few minutes' walk, the majority with the Food Standards Agency's top hygiene rating.

Knightsbridge is the priciest of the six central areas covered on this site. There's a small handful of serviced residences, from about £230 a night, among them Cheval Knightsbridge on Cheval Place behind the Brompton Road, and nearly all of them do three-bedroom apartments.

Knightsbridge station is on the Piccadilly line, direct to Heathrow one way and Green Park and Covent Garden the other, which saves a lot of time with luggage. And since Sloane Street, Hyde Park and the V&A are all within about fifteen minutes' walk, on a short trip you may barely use the Tube at all.
