What the West End is like to stay in

The area is busy almost around the clock. Oxford Street and Regent Street carry flagship stores, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square draw crowds, and the side streets of Soho and Covent Garden fill with diners every evening.

For a quieter stay, look at the edges: Marylebone, Fitzrovia and Mayfair are part of the wider West End but calmer at night.

The West End's shape has changed over time. Oxford Street developed as a shopping street in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and Selfridges opened in 1909. Regent Street was designed by John Nash as a grand processional route between Regent's Park and St James's, and its curving Quadrant remains a landmark. Carnaby Street was the centre of 1960s fashion. Today, many streets are being made more pedestrian-friendly, and new public spaces around Tottenham Court Road and Soho have made it easier to explore on foot.

Theatres, galleries and shops

Theatreland covers dozens of theatres around Shaftesbury Avenue, the Strand and Drury Lane, from long-running musicals to new plays. The National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery face Trafalgar Square, and the Royal Academy is on Piccadilly.

Liberty's mock-Tudor store, Hamleys and Fortnum & Mason are institutions in their own right, and Jermyn Street is known for shirtmakers.

For business stays

Advertising, media, fashion and finance firms have offices throughout the West End, and many international businesses keep their London base here. A central apartment makes back-to-back meetings easier and gives you somewhere to work between them.

Why ask the residence direct?

Booking sites charge the residence a commission on every night. Ask direct and there is none, so the residence has room to move: unpublished specials, a better rate for longer stays, breakfast, flexible check-in and check-out, and sometimes help with theatre or restaurant bookings.
