Getting a table at London's Michelin-starred restaurants
London's famous starred restaurants are hard to book for dinner, much easier at lunch, and several release their tables on a fixed day months ahead, so learning the release dates gets you most of the way there. There's no shortage of choice: the 2026 guide gives London 84 starred restaurants, six of them with three stars.
Put these in the diary
Every restaurant sets its own rules, and they're strict. These are the ones worth diarising:
- Kitchen Table, Fitzrovia (two stars): a whole month of tables goes live at once, three months ahead
- Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Knightsbridge (two stars): bookings open three months to the day
- Gymkhana, Mayfair (two stars): the diary opens at 6am UK time, two months ahead, and the private vaults three months ahead
- Humble Chicken, Soho (two stars): every booking is prepaid and non-refundable, so don't book until your dates are fixed
Lunch, and the counter
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, in the Mandarin Oriental at 66 Knightsbridge, does a three-course set lunch at £65, Monday to Saturday. The dishes people actually come for, Meat Fruit and Tipsy Cake, are on the à la carte, so order those alongside if you can. Walk-ins are taken when tables allow, though you shouldn't rely on it, and for a group there's a chef's table for four to six, with a menu served by the head chef, and a private dining room for 12.
The Ritz Restaurant, with two stars, serves lunch daily from 12.30pm to 2pm and is a far easier booking than a Saturday dinner, though the dress code doesn't relax: men need a jacket and tie, and jeans and trainers are refused. Some kitchens don't open at lunch at all. Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, one of the three-star rooms, is dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm, and welcomes children over ten.
Much of London's most interesting cooking now happens at a counter. At Kitchen Table, 70 Charlotte Street, you sit round a horseshoe while James Knappett and his team cook and talk you through each course. At Humble Chicken, 54 Frith Street, Angelo Sato serves a 16-course omakase to 13 people at a time, at £250 a head for lunch or dinner. Budget beyond the menu, as Kitchen Table's Champagne pairing is another £250 and the wine pairing £175. Counter menus are fixed, Humble Chicken can't cater for most major dietary restrictions, and a booking there can be moved only once, with a week's notice, so mention allergies when you book rather than when you sit down.

The three-star rooms
Three of the six are in Mayfair: Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, Hélène Darroze at The Connaught and The Lecture Room & Library at sketch. Restaurant Gordon Ramsay is in Chelsea, and the other two are in Notting Hill, CORE by Clare Smyth and The Ledbury at 127 Ledbury Road, which books through OpenTable. If you're only doing one, choose by mood rather than stars. The Mayfair hotel rooms are formal and suit a celebration, while the Notting Hill pair are calmer, closer to a very good neighbourhood dinner.
Older lists will mislead you. Le Gavroche closed in January 2024, The Araki isn't in the 2026 guide, and Claude Bosi's two-star cooking is now at Brooklands in Belgravia, so check the current guide before you build an evening round a name.
A tasting menu is a long evening, so take the earliest sitting if you're flying early the next day. Check whether service is included, and read the cancellation terms, because several of these places take a card, or full prepayment, to hold the table. From a Mayfair base you're on foot for three of the three-star rooms plus Gymkhana, with no shortage of everyday places to eat on the other nights.
