A month in Kensington: how the locals actually live

Of all of central London, Kensington is where a long stay feels most like living there. The High Street does the weekly shop, Holland Park and Kensington Gardens do the morning run, and the big museums round Exhibition Road are free to walk into on a wet Sunday.

Kensington High Street

It's a working street rather than a showpiece, with supermarkets, pharmacies, chain shops and a few very good restaurants, and High Street Kensington station on the Circle and District lines in the middle. Two stops are worth making even if you never shop. The Design Museum at 224 to 238 Kensington High Street keeps its permanent display, Designer Maker User, free with no ticket needed, and Japan House London, further east, has changing exhibitions and Akira, its Japanese restaurant.

Kitchen W8 on Abingdon Road is the neighbourhood's Michelin-starred restaurant, with one star in the 2026 guide, and the place to book for a client dinner that shouldn't feel like one. La Palombe at 267 Kensington High Street is more relaxed, a French bistro with wood-fired cooking and produce from its own Kent smallholding, listed in the 2026 Michelin Guide. Akira does Japanese food through the day but shuts early, at 8pm most days, so it's better for lunch or an early supper than a late dinner.

North from the station, Kensington Church Street climbs towards Notting Hill Gate past antique dealers and small restaurants. Most residents walk it on a Saturday morning, and it's the quickest way to Portobello Road on foot, where the antiques market runs Friday to Sunday. Saturday is when every stall is out, so get there before 10am.

Parks and museums

Holland Park is the local one, open from 7.30am until half an hour before dusk. The Kyoto Garden inside it, with a tiered waterfall, a koi pond and peacocks wandering the paths, makes the calmest ten minutes in west London on a weekday morning, and it's free. Come in late March for the cherry blossom, or October for the maples.

Kensington Gardens is bigger and more formal. Kensington Palace sits on its western edge, the Serpentine Galleries in the middle show contemporary art with free entry, and if you keep walking east it turns into Hyde Park without you noticing the join. For dog owners the parks are half the appeal, and about one in five of the residences we list take pets, so filter for it early.

The Natural History Museum, the V&A and the Science Museum are all within a few minutes of each other in South Kensington, with the Royal Albert Hall at the top of the road. The Natural History Museum's galleries are free and open daily from 10am, but it queues at weekends and in school holidays, and a free timed ticket gets you round that. On a long stay, the trick is to go for an hour on a weekday afternoon and come back another time.

Getting around, and the downsides

For Heathrow, the Piccadilly line from Gloucester Road or South Kensington runs direct. For the West End and the City, the Central line from Holland Park or Notting Hill Gate is quickest, and nearly every residence on the site is within about ten minutes' walk of a station anyway.

The downsides are real, though. Kensington goes quiet after 10pm, which suits most long-stay guests and not anyone who likes a late bar, and Exhibition Road is heaving on sunny weekends. The commute to Canary Wharf or the City is long, too, so it's the right base for a Mayfair or West End office and the wrong one for a banking posting. If you're weighing it up for a month or more, ask the residence which apartments suit a long stay.
