Two days, three good meals and one evening off

Two days, three good meals and one evening off

Two days in London on business leaves room for about three good meals, one evening off and a couple of hours of something that isn't work, and trying to squeeze in more tends to spoil all of it. This plan assumes you're staying in Mayfair or St James's and flying into Heathrow.

Arrival and day one

The Heathrow Express gets to Paddington in about 15 minutes, and a taxi on to Mayfair takes roughly the same again, traffic allowing. If you're landing early, ask about early check-in when you enquire, since it's sometimes possible if the apartment's free. Staying within about ten minutes' walk of a station, as nearly every residence on this site is, matters more than it sounds when your meetings are spread across town.

Hold the breakfast meeting at The Wolseley on Piccadilly, London's default power breakfast for years now, where it's loud enough that nobody overhears you. Then work through the day; between St James's, Mayfair and the West End, walking is often quicker than a car. For dinner, Scott's on Mount Street does fish, and Gymkhana, which has two Michelin stars, does Indian cooking people remember. Both need booking ahead, through the residence's concierge desk if it has one.

The free evening

With one evening to yourself, go and see something. The Royal Court on Sloane Square puts on new writing in a small room, and the tickets are reasonable. If you'd rather a big musical, Les Misérables and Hamilton are both on, though the cheap seats go early. For a calmer night, The Ritz Restaurant is a short walk from most of Mayfair, and men need a jacket and tie.

Day two, and the run to Heathrow

Start with a run or a walk in Green Park or Hyde Park, where the Serpentine paths are where London runs before work. Lunch at 45 Jermyn St., or at HIDE if you want a Michelin-starred table looking over Green Park.

With an hour spare before the airport, the Royal Academy on Piccadilly and the Wallace Collection in Marylebone are both close, and the Wallace is free and hardly ever crowded. Allow an hour from Mayfair to a Heathrow gate on a weekday afternoon, and ask about a late check-out when you book so the last morning isn't spent watching the clock.

Why ask the residence direct?

Booking sites charge the residence a commission on every night. Ask direct and there is none, so the residence has room to move: unpublished specials, a better rate for longer stays, breakfast, flexible check-in and check-out, and sometimes help with theatre or restaurant bookings.
