Lunch after the park: where to eat on the edge of the green
The best meal after a walk in Hyde Park is just across the road from Hyde Park Corner, under the glass roof at Céleste. Every royal park in central London has at least one restaurant on its edge worth planning round, and all of these were open when we checked this September.
Hyde Park: Céleste and Brooklands
Céleste at The Lanesborough sits just across from Hyde Park Corner. The dining room has a domed glass roof, so lunch is bright even in November, and the cooking pairs British produce with modern European technique. Afternoon tea is from 2.30pm on weekdays and from noon Friday to Sunday, with live piano on Friday and Saturday evenings, and the dress code is smart casual.
If you'd prefer a view to a glass ceiling, Brooklands by Claude Bosi is on the roof of The Peninsula, on the other side of Hyde Park Corner, with two Michelin stars and the skyline over Belgravia. There are fewer places to eat on the Hyde Park side than in Mayfair behind it, so book the evenings you care about.
Green Park and St James's
Three good rooms face Green Park along one short stretch of Piccadilly. HIDE at 85 Piccadilly has a Michelin star and opens from 7am on weekdays, so it works for a business breakfast as well as dinner. Josh Angus leads the kitchen, the upstairs dining room looks straight across the road into the trees, and the bar below is handy for a drink before you walk home through the park.
The Ritz Restaurant is the grandest room in London with a park view: two Michelin stars, painted ceilings, windows onto Green Park, and jacket and tie for men. Save it for an anniversary, and ask for a window table when you book. The Wolseley, a few doors along, is the everyday option, a big, busy café-restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, and best at weekday breakfast.
Between Green Park and St James's Park, Chutney Mary on St James's Street has been cooking regional Indian food since 1990, with dishes from Goa, Kolkata, Mumbai and Peshawar. It's five minutes' walk from either park. The Pukka Bar opens at 5.30pm for drinks and snacks, and at weekends lunch runs until 2.45pm, which makes it a good end to a Sunday morning round St James's Park lake.

Regent's Park: Feng Shang Princess and Orrery
Feng Shang Princess is a Chinese restaurant on a red pagoda-style boat moored in Cumberland Basin, on the Regent's Canal at the zoo end of the park. It opens at 6pm on weekdays and from noon at weekends, so pair a Saturday at London Zoo with lunch on the water and a walk along the towpath east towards Camden.
At the Marylebone end, Orrery sits above the shops at 55 Marylebone High Street, a short walk from the park's southern gates. It now runs as Orrery by Pierre Minotti, with a rooftop terrace bar for a drink before dinner. It's closed on Sundays and Mondays and does dinner only on Tuesdays, so check before you plan anything early in the week. Marylebone is a strong base for the park anyway, with well over a hundred places to eat within a few minutes' walk.
Hyde Park to Green Park is one continuous walk through Hyde Park Corner, and Green Park runs into St James's Park at the Mall, so an afternoon can link Céleste, a walk and a drink at HIDE without a taxi. When you reserve, ask for a table facing the park. It can't always be promised, but it's rarely offered if you don't ask.
