Where to go for a really good Chinese dinner in London

Where to go for a really good Chinese dinner in London

A. Wong is the hard one to book, and it's also, by Michelin's measure, the best Chinese restaurant in London, with two stars in the 2026 guide and no other Chinese restaurant in the city at that level. Around it sit a handful of rooms in Mayfair, St James's and Kensington that you go to for the Peking duck, the dim sum or the setting, plus a Pimlico institution that has never printed a menu.

A. Wong, Victoria

Andrew Wong's restaurant at 70 Wilton Road runs two quite different services. Dinner is Collections of China, a tasting menu of around three hours that works its way through the provinces, beginning with a drink in the Forbidden City lounge downstairs. Lunch, Wednesday to Saturday, is dim sum, with a dim sum tasting menu as well, and for most visitors it's the realistic way in. It takes its own bookings rather than using a platform, and it's closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Peking duck in St James's, Park Lane and Kensington

Imperial Treasure, at 9 Waterloo Place off Pall Mall, is the London branch of a Singapore group and the most formal room here. The draw is Peking duck, which at lunch comes as a set with a bottle of wine at £198 and in the evening anchors an eight-course menu at £148. Order the duck when you book rather than at the table. The £40 dim sum set lunch, Monday to Friday until 3pm, is the good-value way to see the place.

China Tang is in The Dorchester on Park Lane. The late Sir David Tang created it, and the art deco room still takes its cue from pre-war Shanghai. The kitchen is Cantonese, with dim sum at lunch and lacquered Peking duck at dinner, and the bar, good for a drink first, does a Cantonese afternoon tea and has live music.

At Min Jiang the view counts for as much as the food. It's on the 10th floor of the Royal Garden Hotel, 2-24 Kensington High Street, looking over Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park towards the West End. The wood-fired Beijing duck is served in two courses and takes time to roast from scratch, so pre-order it when you reserve. On a clear evening ask for a window table. Lunch is noon to 3pm, dinner 6pm to 10.30pm.

Late nights, and a dinner with no menu

Hakkasan Mayfair, 17 Bruton Street, has a discreet street door and two moods. The ground floor is calmer and good for dim sum at lunch, while downstairs is darker and louder, with a menu that leans on whole native lobster and black truffle roast duck. It serves until 12.30am most nights and 1am Thursday to Saturday, handy after a late meeting.

Park Chinois, at 17 Berkeley Street, is more supper club than restaurant. Club Chinois opens from 6pm Tuesday to Sunday, with DJ sets, and runs until 2am. Its calmer sister room, Salon de Chine, has been refurbished and was due back in September 2026, so check which of the two very different rooms you've been booked into.

Hunan, at 51 Pimlico Road, has done things the same way for decades and has no menu. You tell the staff what you don't eat and how much chilli you can take, and the kitchen sends out a long run of small plates, at £128.80 a head for dinner and £69.80 for lunch. It suits a table of four who like surprises, after a wander round the Pimlico Road antique shops. It's closed on Sundays, and fallbacks are thin, with only about fifteen food businesses within five minutes' walk of the nearby Pimlico flats.

Friday and Saturday dinner goes first everywhere. Lunch is easier, and generally cheaper, at A. Wong, Imperial Treasure and Hakkasan. From Mayfair, Hakkasan, Park Chinois and China Tang are all a short walk from Berkeley Square or Park Lane, and A. Wong and Hunan are a few minutes south by cab.
